This was one stellar romance! I loved Zach and Monica together! Their chemistry was amazing! And, you couldn't find a more sweeter guy than Zach! Sure, Monica had her issues. But, she was funny and feisty. She was just afraid to get her heart broken. One could definitely understand that when reading about her past. It wasn't pretty.

This was also a sports romance. A football one. So, there was some training and game time. Charity work also came into play. And, Zach was definitely one to give back as he expresses the need to advocate against bullying and how he is inspired to appreciate people who came into his life to help him while his own family wasn't the best growing up. He was just such refreshing character.

The romance between this couple wasn't all that steamy. Not so much fade-to-black scenes. But, it was more sensual and about the chemistry between the two. I liked how the author included the cooking and food scenes to show how they connected on all bases not just in the bedroom. But, when it came to that secret that Monica was keeping to herself, we saw a whole different side of Zach. Yes, he was blind-sided, but man was he ever angry. And, what a dummy I was. I never saw it coming!!

Well, this was one sweet romance! And, I loved it! The characters. The story lines. The big reveal. And, the romance. It was one beautiful story of trying to bury the past and trusting again. One not to be missed... (less)

Characters Monica and Zach with alternating points of view. College years. NFL football player and an office manager.
I wasn’t keen on the food and dessert dialogue. The delivery of this type of dialogue felt forced and too redundant. I guess I don’t have a thing for food.
Overall I wasn’t crazy about the story being broken into steps. The introductions of these characters left me with too many questions. The answers came later when I needed them sooner.
I had high expectations for this book after finishing Up in the Treehouse. I thought this one would be an extension of that book. It reads nothing like that book. Between the food and football storyline it was mind numbingly boring.
I may have wanted more Chloe and Gavin after reading Up in the Treehouse, yet adding them as minor characters in this one isn’t what I wanted.
Story KK Allen has a wonderful message to share about bullying, fear, forgiveness, and hope. Yet I still struggled to connect with this story.
My least favorite trope is this type of push n pull. I don’t like when characters run instead of facing their fears.
Monica’s character felt abandoned by the circumstances of her families past situation, yet her character behaved immaturely. She just seemed weak and needy. I prefer stronger characters who are able to learn and grow from past choices. She needed to be coddled. I hated how she wouldn’t listen to reason and ran from people then pouted that her life was ruined when she didn’t give others a chance to explain.
K.K. Allen has blown me away with this book. I did not think she could top Up In The Treehouse, but Under The Bleachers is equally as enjoyable! I am not a fan of sports in any way, shape, or form and this book absolutely held my attention, thanks to its character driven plot and the extremely likable personalities of the two MCs. Bleachers deals with scars. Scars can be caused by so many things; absent fathers, childhood bullies, self-doubt, and guilt. Healing takes time, and sometimes it takes a very special person to make you realize that those scars make you beautiful. They are reminders that you have lived, after all. That you survived to tell the tale. The tale of Under the Bleachers is a magnificent journey inward to find one's true self and to let it flourish. Zachary Ryan brings out the best in Monica, he sets her passions in motion and gives her the courage and the confidence to go after a dream she didn't even realize she had. There is also some great background content with our favorite couple from Up In The Treehouse! This book deserves so much more than 5 stars. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a well-written love story that deals with real life fears and obstacles.
