This book grabbed my attention from page one and kept me turning the pages until the end. I loved the beginning of this book and enjoyed it throughout, but the entire time I was reading it, I thought it must be a sequel. It's not. Or at least, I don't think it is. At any rate, I couldn't find a previous book. The reason I believed this book to be a sequel was because of Sawyer, the man who tricks Alex into going back through the portal to save her sister. He's obviously part of some secret military operation because there are soldiers. But is it a legit operation? Black ops? In the book, he mentions observing the past and not changing it or saving anyone from the past who would have/should have died. But there is no explanation as to why he and his group have opened this portal. And then toward the end of the book when the author reveals a new twist to the plot, there is no real explanation as to how/why the events came about to begin with.
Then their is Alex's sister and what seems like an entire story that has taken place earlier. I thought for sure there must have been a book about the sister before Alex's story. Again, I don't think there is. But maybe there is a sequel in the works, one that will tell Charlotte's story and explain how a doctor, who is only twenty-five so maybe she is just a medical student or new graduate who hasn't done her residency yet, managed to get forced back in time. A sequel could tie up loose ends and I would most definitely read it.
The story is fast past and I loved the characters. There were just a few nagging unanswered questions that keep me from giving this book 5 stars. But since those questions didn't stop me from reading the book or enjoying it immensely, I give it 4 stars.

There are SO many book choices out there and readers can't possibly get to them all. What I look for in a book, Time for Love had in spades. Time travel is my guilty pleasure -- when I'm just looking to unwind and finally get a little "me" time. When I get so into a book that I want (need!) to put my real life on hold until I know that the characters have gotten their happy ending, then THAT is a winner for me. I'm mad at myself that this book has been on my for a year and I only got to it this week.
My only little nitpicky issue with the story was Charlotte. In future England she is a doctor -- but the twins are only 25. I suppose this is doable, if she's super brilliant and zipped through high school/university, etc. We didn't spend enough time with Charlotte to know whether this is true. And it wasn't enough to yank me out of the story, it was just a little "hey, wait a minute..." blip.
I loved the premise, but don't want to reveal too much about the plot to explain why it was so unique. Buy it! Read it! Then you can thank me later. ;)
I am a huge fan of Time Travel Romance books and am always looking for a good read. Since I've read so many, I've found that most authors do a pretty good job with the beginning of the story writing about intriguing characters and setting up the story. Most even do well by writing about the sexual tension between the heroine and hero. What very few do well is to write a compelling story after the relationship is "consummated". This book continued that unfortunate trend for me. The story about Alex dressing as a boy to voyage across the sea to find her twin sister before she is killed was intriguing. Nicholas, the Captain, is an appealing hero flawed in the inside and out but still very attractive. The chemistry between Alex and Nicholas was good. However, after they left the ship and the rest of the story continued, I found myself skipping through paragraphs and pages. The mystery part just fell flat for me.
This is going to be what I refer to as a "drive by book review", which basically means that I was sucked into reading a book that I had no plan to review. As with most of my drive by reviews, this book proved to be a time sink; I have no idea where my missing hours went or how it happened.
I downloaded the story off during a free day. The author has been a guest on my blog but she didn't request a review or provide an ARC. I opened the first page to check out the writing and BOOM--spent the next several hours ignoring my own story due to compulsive page turning to find out what would happen next.
The Cover OMG, LOOOOVE IT!
The Story I note with amusement that this is a paranormal time travel romance. When you're married to a physics & math guy, time travel stories are the equivalent of a pint of dark chocolate gelato hidden in the freezer. I know it's wrong, but I don't care.
I found Emma Kaye's writing style to have overall good flow with occasional rough patches where I felt there was some telling going on. The cast of characters is complex and interesting, but dialogue had an overall modern feel to it. The plot held my attention throughout. I felt the author did a pretty good job of addressing the social inequities facing women in the past without getting preachy about it.
I liked the heroine, Alex, who is a competent modern woman with some believable confidence issues. Poor Alex finds herself in some hilarious situations as a modern woman confronted with historical social conventions. Her hero, Nicholas, is a ship's captain and English nobility from another era. He's a bit of a male chauvinist but in adorable and forgivable ways.
I loved the interaction between the hero and heroine but I do have one complaint. Heat levels never exceeded more than a few steamy kisses. Damn it, that cover promised me ripped bodices and heaving bosoms! I really wanted more in the way of chicka-chicka-boom-boom.
The Happily Ever After ending left me with the same happy, endorphins-firing buzz as the aforementioned pint of chocolate gelato, but with a lot fewer calories. Recommended for anyone looking for a guilty pleasure.
